Sailors at Football, Cromarty - c1910

A football pitch on the 'Reeds Park', nowadays the fields out towards the sewage farm. There used to be an old poster in the Arms advertising 'Highland Games' in the Reeds Park, but this is the first photographic evidence I've seen of the fields being used in this way.

Fantastic postcard. Was this area not also known as 'the Targets'?

Have a look at picture #634 - it's advertising a Highland Games in Reeds Park - around 1933.

This is a really interesting picture. Some of the HMS Natal crew were playing or watching football here on the afternoon of December 30th 1915 so were not on the ship when it blew up. They knew about it soon enough though. They could see the great plume of cordite smoke from here and ran back through the town to the harbour only to find that the ship had already gone down taking many of their shipmates with it.

Perhaps the picture of my Grandfather, Rev Alexander MacLean, starting one of the girls' races at a sports day in (or around) 1912, was taken in "Reeds Park"? (picture #2556)
