Ferry on its way....

Where is it going and why?

She has been sold and is off to a new home in England. A new Ferry - bigger at four car capacity rather than two - is being built in Southampton at present, and should be delivered in the early summer. At £500K for the new vessel, a serious investment for the Cromarty Ferry Company, so hat off to them.

I'm sorry to hear that the Rose is going ..I was back in 2006 ..and crossed from Nigg to Cromarty ..a lovely trip in the late summer evening ..and I can understand ..the space was limited to TWO cars?..so if the new one being built is to bring more people through the town ..that will be another plus for Cromarty !!

I wish I had known when the Cromarty Rose was going - I am sure that some folk would have been there to wave it off.

The Cromarty Ferry company are asking people for suggestions for the name of the new ferry (via their website).
There is a story and drawing of the new ferry design in the local paper for Southampton (Daily Echo) - search for 'cromarty ferry' for the story. Seems to look very similar shape to the 'Rose.

Rose had a very eventful journey, broke down several times and eventually started to sink so was rescued by a lifeboat, and is now on Isle of Arran awaiting repair. Hopefully she will eventually reach Weston-Super-Mare where it is hoped to use her as a passenger ferry only.

Following some repairs in the Isle of Man the Cromarty Rose made it to Bristol and will shortly be entering Sharpness dry dock for improvement work to be carried out so that she can continue to work as a passenger ferry in the Bristol channel, ferrying people to and from Steepholm Island.
