My brother Ray (rajah) Jones was one of the first on site he was one of the 6 week wonder welders, the 2 ships were there then but by the time I got there the Hermes had left and we stayed on board the Highland Queen until we moved in to the shore camp as Nobby Williams said, this was the first camp just off the end of the Pier on the left, the main shore camp was built later.

These two ships were built by Fairfield Glasgow and launched in 1930.The Hermes was originally Princess Joan and the Pegasus was Princess Elizabeth. They were Canadian Pacific Steamers at Vancouver until 1960 when they transferred to the Mediterranean Cruise Line. It is curious and unusual for sister ships that they were always together throughout their working life, right to the end and this photograph is unique in their history as just after it was taken both vessels were sent for scrap. They were beautiful steamers in their day.
