Beech Avenue at MacFarquhar's Bed

This show the perilous state of the avenue of beech trees leading down to MacFarquhars bed. Believed to have been planted by George Ross back in the 18th century as part of his intensive tree planting schemes, these trees are now senile, collapsing and rotting. They should have been replanted with seedlings 40 years ago to ensure the future of the avenue. See picture #88 from around 1900 showing the trees near their prime.

Comments:
This route is actually a right of way, part of a return to Cromarty walk round the 'back of the Hill'. The 'beware of the Bull' notice doesn't help as you pass Cromarty Mains. I admire the courage of those who took the colour photo, to show us the state of the trees! If the farmer could be persuaded, he would be given Grant Aid to plant
from Forest Enterprise, especially for reintroducing hardwoods!Come on man, shift the bull during the tourist season, or let him have his fun in another field! He'll enjoy pastures new!

Jane, Loren and Fennec are the intrepid explorers if I am not mistaken.

It was me that took the picture, and no bravery was involved. Although there is a 'beware of the bull sign', I've never seen a bull in that particluar field. (And it's Loren, Barbel and Fennec).

The bull makes the walk more exciting!

Looks lovely. Cant wait to see it for real. My mother is a McFarquhar and my father is a Ross. Traced my family back to Bindal, Talbat.

Where is Talbat?

Sorry. It was Tarbat.
