Picnic on Nigg Beach - 1945

Mary says "I have been told that this was taken on Nigg beach, which I understand was a favourite spot for the Cromarty folk to go.

Year - 1945. Left to right: Bella and Robbie Chapman, Robin Munro and Elsie Munro (nee Chapman). I can't figure out what the weather was like - my grandmother and mother appear to be sitting in different climates!

Can anyone identify the building in the background?"

The photo must have been taken just after the war finished, because all photography was
restricted to the Services during 1939-45. Mr Chapman was the local Newsagent, with his
wife assisting, I remember them both clearly. They appear to be picnicing on the beach
below the westmost house (staff quarters) of the former Dunskaith House, lost by fire, and
was to the right of the photo as viewed. Mr Chapman, by chance was the local Agent for
Blackadder, a Photo Lab. Company, so he might have had access to film more easily at
that time. Where they are sitting, in the photo, is almost the east side of where the concrete dock
gate of the former Brown & Root yard was built.

Interesting you should mention that Mr Chapman was an agent for a photo lab company - yesterday I was sent picture #791 on which the photographers name is Chapman.

This was indeed my grandfather, Garve - Robert Morrison Chapman. picture #351 (postcard of Hugh Miller's Cottage) was also taken by him.
